Champions of Scientists, Teachers, Conservationists & Creators Highlight Groundbreaking Work
The Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation was founded in 2018 by Delle Maxwell and Pat Hanrahan to help individuals who explore through fieldwork in natural sciences, create and promote mastery in art and craft, teach and support students in public education, and encourage care and conservation of the natural world. The Foundation makes grants based on recommendations from experts from relevant fields, emphasizing curiosity, continuous learning, inclusion, innovation, flexibility, and collaboration. Project6 worked with the foundation to refresh the website design and build the website to be modular, flexible, easy to manage, and accessible.
Problem
Time-Consuming Tasks
It can be nearly impossible to please the visionary founder of any organization, particularly one who played a significant role in the original website design. Project6 accepted the challenge, bringing its considerable design, development, and management experience to a 10-year-old website. Primarily, the foundation team wanted to simplify a time-consuming, manual grant editing process, but there was much more to do.
Solution
Keeping It Simple
The new site maintains the clean simplicity of the original, with a refined aesthetic, refined navigation, and enhanced new ways to learn about, and delve into, awardees’ achievements. We disassembled the original blog to distinguish between awardees, grants, and staff, allowing users to search and filter each type of content. Each successive cohort of grantees in each of the foundation’s focus areas is featured and celebrated. And the grantee listing can be uploaded with two clicks.
Result
Revitalized
Not only did the design refinements excite the co-founder and her team—and, from the feedback, their audiences as well—it surpassed their expectations for a modern, authentic design with enticing, low-maintenance content and maximum ease-of-use, flexibility, accessibility.

—Rebekah Frank, Program Officer, Maxwell/Hanrahan FoundationProject6 listened closely, asked appropriate questions, and gently challenged our assumptions. The project manager, Christine McGuinness, was responsive, kind, warm and, most importantly, concise in her communication. Website data uploads that used to take hours now take minutes. The new grant listing page is searchable, sortable and filters beautifully. The accessibility of the site is much improved and the ease of navigation between program pages is intuitive.
The website was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. The result is a website that represents the foundation’s mission and focuses on the creative, innovative people we serve.
